Why odds formats differ

Odds formats are just different notations for the same price. Asian sportsbooks commonly show Malay, Hong Kong or Indonesian odds, while decimal odds are popular for their simplicity.

Switching format does not change what you win. It only changes how the price is written, so pick the one you can calculate in your head without hesitation.

Decimal odds

Decimal odds show the total return per unit staked, including your stake. Multiply the stake by the odds to get the full payout.

Worked example: RM50 at 2.40 returns RM120, of which RM70 is profit. The implied probability is 1 divided by the odds, so 2.40 implies about 41.7%.

Hong Kong and Malay odds

Hong Kong odds show profit only, so they equal decimal odds minus one. A Hong Kong price of 1.40 is the same as decimal 2.40, and a RM50 stake wins RM70 profit.

Malay odds run from -1 to +1. A positive Malay price such as 0.70 means you win RM0.70 profit for every RM1 staked. A negative price such as -0.80 means you risk RM0.80 to win RM1, so a RM40 stake at -0.80 would win RM50 profit.

Indonesian odds

Indonesian odds work like American odds divided by 100. A positive price such as +1.50 shows profit per unit staked, while a negative price such as -2.00 shows how much you must stake to win one unit.

Converting a price yourself

If the bet slip does not offer your preferred format, you can convert by hand.

  1. Start from Hong Kong odds by subtracting 1 from the decimal price.
  2. If the Hong Kong figure is 1.00 or lower, the Malay price is the same number.
  3. If it is above 1.00, the Malay price is -1 divided by the Hong Kong figure.
  4. Check your result by working out the return on a RM10 stake in both formats.

Questions

Frequently asked questions

Why do some Malay odds have a minus sign?

A negative Malay price marks a selection where you stake more than you can win. The number shows what you risk to win one unit of profit.

Does the odds format affect the bookmaker margin?

No. The margin is built into the underlying price, and every format shows that same price with the same margin.

How do I find the implied probability from Hong Kong odds?

Add 1 to the Hong Kong price to get the decimal price, then divide 1 by that figure.
